How Konvoy’s IoT Keg Tracking Technology is Solving the $5.6 Million Keg Theft Problem in the Beer Industry

Drinks Adventure Podcast:  Keg theft meets its match with Konvoy

Crushed bales of kegs at scrapyard

Six months ago, our CEO Wade Rushton-Clarke highlighted a major issue affecting the alcohol industry—keg theft. One visit to a scrap yard revealed 10 bales of squashed kegs, equating to 840 kegs and representing a staggering $5.6 million annual impact on the beer industry. And unfortunately, that was just the beginning.

In a recent conversation with James Atkinson on the Drinks Adventures Podcast, Wade discussed how Konvoy's Katch tracking technology has been instrumental in solving this problem. By working with Victoria Police, we helped uncover a systematic theft operation through real-time data from Katch.

Earlier this year, there was a spike in large-scale keg thefts, where opportunists sold off empty kegs as scrap metal. This practice severely impacts brewers, who rely on their kegs to be returned promptly to keep their operations running smoothly. Thanks to Konvoy's technology, we tracked the stolen kegs to various scrapyards, providing police with the evidence needed to bring those responsible to justice. Today, we've reduced missing kegs in our fleet to less than one percent.

In this podcast, we explore the power of tracking, data, and the growing role of the Internet of Things (IoT) in safeguarding the industry. This is just one example of how we use data, analytics, and technology at Konvoy to drive value for businesses across the sector.
